In the UK, new electric vans are eligible for a plug-in vehicle grant. People looking to buy low-emission vans can get a discount. This is through a grant the government gives to dealerships and manufacturers. The whole idea is that the government puts money towards the purchase of zero-emissions vehicles. As a result, there is a cash incentive for people to switch to electric.
How does the grant work?
If you purchase a low-emission vehicle, you don’t need to do anything. The dealer will include the value of the grant in the vehicle’s price. The amount of grant you receive will depend on the vehicle you purchase. And, which category this vehicle falls into. There are six categories consisting of vehicles eligible for grant:
- Large vans and trucks
It’s important to note that only vehicles that have been approved by the government are eligible for the grant.
Electric vans with CO2 emission levels of fewer than 75g/km and the ability to travel at least 16km (10 miles) with no emissions can qualify for a grant of up to 20% off the purchase price (up to a maximum of £8,000).
Other rules cover minimum top speed (50mph), minimum electric driving range (60 miles for a pure electric van and 10 miles for a hybrid) and minimum warranty length (three years / 60,000 for the base vehicle, with additional requirements for the batteries).
Aftermarket conversions do not qualify for the grant; instead, the van must have been built or converted to electric power prior to first registration.
